Boardmembers and Advisors

Dr. Timothy Patrick McCarthy is Director of the Human Rights and Social Movements Program at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.  He is also an award-winning Lecturer on History and Literature and on Public Policy at Harvard University.  At the Carr Center, Dr. McCarthy’s responsibilities include directing an ambitious research agenda and co-chairing the Regional Working Group on Modern-Day Slavery and Human Trafficking, a first-of-its-kind research collaborative with scholars and practitioners working to combat the global scourge of human bondage.

Dr. McCarthy graduated with honors from Harvard College in History and Literature and received his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in History from Columbia University. He was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard’s Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History, and he is also the recipient of research fellowships from the Ford and Mellon Foundations, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Oberlin College Archives, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.   As a historian of social movements, Dr. McCarthy has published three books.

Dr. McCarthy was a founding member of President Barack Obama’s National LGBT Leadership Council, serves on the advisory board of the Harvey Milk Foundation, and is lead research collaborator and founding governing board member for Face Value, a new organization dedicated to eradicating social and cultural stigma against LGBT people.  His full bio is available here.

Sabiha Basrai is a graphic designer and visual communications strategist with years of experience shaping the campaigns of organizations seeking political change.

Basrai is a co-owner of Design Action Collective in Oakland, California — a worker-owned cooperative that provides graphic design and visual communications for progressive, non-profit and social change organizations. She is also an active member of the Alliance of South Asians Taking Action (ASATA). Prior to joining Design Action, Basrai served as design associate for Public Interest GRFX in Philadelphia, where she developed messaging strategies and designed campaign materials for the National Association of State PIRGs. Basrai is a graduate of the Art and Design program at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Nafisa Haji is a Pakistani American novelist and author of The Writing on My Forehead, published by William Morrow.  Her first novel was described by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, as a “moving meditation on the meaning of family, tradition, and the ties that bind.”Ms. Haji holds a BA in American History from UC Berkeley and a Doctorate in Education from UCLA.  Prior to writing fulltime, she taught elementary school in Los Angeles for seven years in a bilingual Spanish program.  Ms. Haji maintains close family ties in Pakistan, traveling there regularly to visit.  She is currently working on her second novel.

Dalia Hashad is an attorney and independent consultant specializing in human rights and civil rights.  She has run programs at Amnesty International and the ACLU, and she has served as a human rights legal adviser in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

At Amnesty International, Ms. Hashad was the Director of the USA Program, focusing on racial profiling, criminal justice and national security.  She also served as AIUSA’s policy specialist in global identity discrimination, addressing issues of race, sexual orientation, religion and gender.   At the ACLU, Ms. Hashad served as the Arab, Muslim, South Asian Advocate, focusing on post-9/11 civil liberties and human rights abuses.   For seven years, Ms. Hashad also co-hosted and co-produced “Law and Disorder,” a weekly talk radio program on human rights and civil rights in the U.S.  As chairperson for CALPIRG, she tackled environmental issues, hunger and homelessness, campaign finance reform, and student aid.   Ms. Hashad holds a BA in Environmental Policy from UC Berkeley and a JD from NYU.

Jesse Lava is a campaign director at Brave New Foundation, which makes short videos and other forms of creative media to promote social justice. There his work has focused on criminal justice and economic inequality. Previously a communications strategist for progressive causes, his work has covered an array of policy areas including climate change, campaign finance, drug treatment, and human services funding. Lava was also the founding director of Faithful Democrats and has penned numerous pieces for faith-based and other publications. He has a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor’s in Government (with a concentration in international relations) from Wesleyan University.
